About
The Graduate Program in Philosophy of Science was founded in 1994 thanks to the support a group of researchers pioneers in this field of study in Mexico. It was one of UNAM’s first graduate programs to use a tutorial system and has evolved alongside some of the most transcendent changes in UNAM’s graduate school system. After 25 years of existence, the Graduate Program has nurtured a solid community of supervisors, teachers, and students working on a wide academic production and promoting in a vigorous manner critical research, and the teaching and diffusion of philosophy of science from various disciplinary approaches. The Graduate Program has reached a stage of maturity and consolidation, and has attained the highest renown of the National Program of Quality Graduate Schools of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT), both in its Master’s Program and its Doctoral Program.
General Objective
The main objective of the Graduate Program in Philosophy of Science is to train masters and doctors in Philosophy of Science who understand both science and technology as complex and multidimensional cultural phenomena, capable of devising proposals for a better evaluation and harnessing of them by society, and of participating in the design and evaluation of policies that concern them. By adopting the cognitive and epistemological dimensions as guidelines, and the resources offered by the academic disciplines that analyze the sciences and technologies, our students are able to generate adequate interpretations and elucidations and, when necessary, constructive opinions of their topics of study. They also do contributions or relevant reviews useful in academic contexts, as well as in social, cultural, and political ones. In particular, our doctoral graduates are capable of successfully conducting research projects specialized in these areas, as well as participating in teaching, outreach activities, and consultation for public institutions.
Fields of Knowledge
Throughout out our master’s and doctoral program, the Graduate Program offers a solid background in six different fields of knowledge:
- philosophy of science,
- the philosophy of cognitive science,
- philosophy of mathematics and the logic of science,
- the history of science,
- philosophical and social studies about science and technology, and
- the communication of science.
