Time and permanence

The PhD degree normally lasts six semesters for full-time students. To continue in the doctoral program, it is necessary to comply with the semesterly timetable of activities set and approved by the Tutorial Committee, and to have satisfactory evaluations.

If the student has no satisfactory evaluations in the next two consecutive semesters, the student will be dismissed from the program, except in the cases authorized by the Academic Committee. In any case, the permanence of the PhD student will be decided by the Academic Committee according to the evaluations of the Tutorial Committee.

In justified cases, the Academic Committee could authorize for two additional semesters to the regular six-semesters period for the student to conclude their dissertation and obtain their degree. These applications for extensions must have the support of the Tutorial Committee.

In exceptional cases, the Academic Committee may deem possible to accept part-time students. In these cases, the Academic Committee could authorize in an extraordinary manner and with the justified support of the Tutorial Committee up to two more semester, after the additional semesters, so long as that the maximum limit of ten semesters is not exceeded.

Leaves of absence and dismissals

In exceptional cases, and with the consent of the Academic Committee, students may opt for leaves of absence if they have other activities which prevent them from continuing their doctoral research in an adequate manner. The Academic Committee will indicate the deadline for the student to go back to studying and enroll once again in the program, before a dismissal proceeds.

Whenever a student receives two consecutive semesterly evaluations, that will be sufficient motive for dismissal or suspension from the program.

The Tutorial Committee will be the responsible of proposing to the Academic Committee the change in the enrollment of the student in the master’s program to the doctoral program, or vice versa. In this last case, the Tutorial Committee will suggest the value of the credits of the academic activities done in the doctoral program and also the proposal of revalidation corresponding to the master’s program.

The Tutorial Committee will be also in charge of determining if the doctoral student is prepared to opt for candidacy, and of proposing a jury for the degree exam.

Requirements for change of enrollment from the doctoral degree to the master’s degree

When the student’s performance enrolled in the doctoral program is not satisfactory, but the Academic Committee considers that they have the capacity to pass the master’s degree, the student may opt to change their ascription from the doctoral program to the master’s program. In the cases in which the dismissal from the program happens for reasons of neglect or unsatisfactory performance, the dismissal will be definitive.
