About / Prospective Students / Process of Admission

The Master’s Program in Philosophy of Science has a rigorous selection process for students, and it consists of three stages.

  1. During the first stage, the CVs and abilities of applicants are checked using as parameters reading comprehension and writing exams; writing samples and research-project proposals are also checked for this purpose. This is done in order to select the students with the most suitable profiles depending of the field of knowledge the corresponding call for applications is opened for.

  2.

  3. The second stage consists of individual interviews by the Admissions Committee to the applicants selected during the first stage, in order to ask for specific information about the candidate’s profile as well as their academic experience, interests, objectives, and expectations concerning the Graduate Program. A second selection is done at this point.

  4.

  5. The third stage consists of the pre-degree course (lasting 12 weeks) the basic contents of which are: philosophy of science, epistemology, and logic (or critical thinking).

These pre-degree modules aim to give a common theoretical background to students coming from diverse disciplines, as well as to familiarize them with the object of study and methodology of the master’s degree. This is also done in order for them to decide if they will continue with the process of admission or not. It also aims to offer an evaluation of the profile, performance, and aptitude of the student so the Academic Committee may arrive to a final decision.

All prospective students (specifically, those applying to the master’s and doctoral program who do not have a previous degree in philosophy or philosophy of science) will have to take and pass with at least a 8/10 grade each pre-degree modules established by the Academic Committee. It must be mentioned that the Committee could exempt applicants from taking one or all of the pre-degree modules if they satisfactorily demonstrate sufficient command of the contents.

At the end of the pre-degree semester, the Academic Committee carries out the final evaluation and issues a letter of academic sufficiency for admitted students.
